3-year-old Eats 37 Magnets

          The x-ray of three-year-old Peyton showed a bracelet that they assumed she had swallowed. However, after a bit more investigating, they discovered that the toddler swallowed not a bracelet, but 37 Rare-Earth Buckyball magnets that had connected. Apparently they were so strong that they joined together, ripping three holes in her lower intestine, and one in her stomach. Doctors have seen kids who had swallowed 10 magnets or less, but 37 is a record. 

       Her parents said that she had thought that it was food, and being the typical curious toddler she is, she decided to eat it. 

    Thankfully, the doctors were able to remove them, and Peyton is on her way to full recovery.

Mrs Hounshell’s Science Class The 6th graders here at Smith are learning about energy. They are learning about non-renewable and renewable energy. As part of this energy unit, they recently read The Lorax, a book about saving the trees. This book was written by Dr. Seuss, a legend of rhyme. Today is Dr.Seuss’ birthday. In honor of his birthday, the movie The Lorax, comes out today, starring Zac Efron, Taylor Swift and Betty White. The 6th graders read this book to learn about trees and saving the environment, but also to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, who was born 1904. Dr.Seuss has written many other beloved children's books including The Cat and The Hat, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Horton Hears a Who?, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Grinch. Dr.Seuss will always be remembered and loved by all, even by adults.

Latino Initiative

Latino initiative is a program that meets on Tuesdays after school when Latino students have fun and also get their homework done. During this time they first go outside and play. Then UNC tutors come and help them get there work done. The difference between an original after school program and Latino Initiative is that they have tutors to help the students. Students also join this program because they feel more comfortable with other students that speak their own language. This program helps students speak up when they need to and they also get a chance to get to know other people like them in other grade levels. On the last day of after school we have a party and we all bring food like tamales, posole, enchiladas and a lot more.

INTERVIEW:
David: why did you join Latino initiative?
Oscar: I joined Latino initiative because I needed more help and I did get help by tutors.
David: How does this program help you?
Oscar: It helps me because I turn in my homework on time by tutors and this program has more resources.
David: What do you do in this program?
Oscar: It is like after school we do our homework and play outside but this program is even better.
David: Do you think this program should only be for Latinos?
Oscar: No I think this program should be for everybody who needs it.
David: When you signed up to this program what did you expect?
Oscar: A lot more help and more free time.
David: Do you this program should change in anyway?
Oscar: Yes this program should be Monday and Tuesday not just on Tuesday and this program should also be for anybody.

Apple A decade ago, Apple was only worth $10 billion. A year ago, Apple was worth $127 billion. Weeks ago, Apple was worth $500 billion on the stock market, which is worth more than the GDP of Poland, Sweden, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Belgium and many more countries. Apple's stock has been rocketing and was worth a staggering $540 per share at one point. Reports say that Apple sales were up 73% from last year. Apple is worth more than a huge list of things. So many in fact, that somebody actually made a web page listing things Apple is worth more than. The website is http://thingsappleisworthmorethan.tumblr.com/. According to the website, Apple is worth more than 1 billion Ipads, the global coffee industry, worldwide lottery sales, more than 10 whole National Football Leagues (all of the teams’ value added up), and much, much, more. Only 4 other companies are, or have been worth half of a trillion dollars or more, These companies include: Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Cisco, and General Electric (GE). In 1999, Cisco and GE reached $500 billion and Microsoft reached $600 billion, which was the highest value that a company has ever reached.

Michigan Basketball

On Thursday, March 1st, Michigan Basketball played at Illinois. Michigan was trying to break a 13 game streak of losing at Illinois that started in 1995. Michigan Basketball came into the game ranked #16 in the nation, while Illinois came into the game unranked, trying to get a bid for the NCAA Tournament. During the game, Illinois never lead, and missed countless opportunities to take the lead. Many Illinois runs kept them close, but they could never take the lead. After Michigan’s 72 to 61 win on Thursday, they are so close to a share of the regular season Big Ten title. On Sunday, their chances rely on their primary rival, Ohio State. If Ohio State wins against Michigan State, all three teams will have a share of the title.

NBA All-Star Weekend 2012

The first day of the NBA’s all star weekend was Friday February 24th. This day had two main events, the celebrity game, and the Rising Stars Challenge. The two coaches for the celebrity game were Dwight Howard and Kevin Durant. Dwight Howard's team won in a blowout. The game included; Ne-Yo, Vinny Guadagnino, and Kevin Hart. Kevin Hart ended up winning the Celebrity game MVP. The two teams of the Rising Stars game were Team Chuck, and Team Shaq. Team Chuck was coached by NBA legend Charles Barkley, and Team Shaq was coached by future hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neil. Team Chuck won the game 146 to 133. Team Chuck won because of their high shooting percentage. The second day of all star weekend was Saturday February 25th. This days main events were Haier Shooting Stars Challenge, the Taco Bell Skill Challenges, the Footlocker Three Point competition and the Sprite Dunk Contest. The teams for the Shooting Stars are made up of one former NBA player, one current NBA player, and one current WNBA player that all play in the same state. The winning team in the Haier Shooting stars was team New York. Team New York was made up by Landry Fields (a current nba player), Allan Houston (an NBA legend), and Cappie Pondexter (a WNBA player). The Taco Bell Skills Challenge is a competition for point guards that tests their passing, dribbling, and shooting. It starts out by a player taking a layup. Then the player has to chest pass through a set of skinny rings. They then dribble through a set of cones. Directly after the cones they must bounce pass a ball through another set of rings. Fifth they must make a fifteen foot jump shot. They then must preform an accurate outlet pass before continuing the the course. After dribbling through a second set of cones they finish the course by making a layup. The challenge was won by Tony Parker, a point guard who plays for the San Antonio Spurs. After the skills challenge there was the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest. The Three-Point Contest has 5 ball racks each one with five balls. A player has 60 seconds to make as many three pointers as they can. The first 4 balls on each rack count as one point while the fifth ball counts as two. The contestants were; Kevin Love, Kevin Durant, James Jones, Ryan Anderson, Anthony Morrow, and Mario Chalmers. The final round was between the Kevin Love, and Kevin Durant. Kevin love came out on top. The final event of the night was the Sprite Dunk Contest. The dunk contests contestants were; Jeremy Evans (replacing the injured Iman Shumpert), Derrick Williams, Chase Budinger and Paul George. Highlight dunks included a lights off glow in the dark slam, dunking two balls at once, jumping over P-diddy and jumping over Kevin Hart. The winner of the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest was Jeremy Evans. Sunday, February 26th was the final day of NBA All-Star weekend. The All-Star Game takes place then. The All-Star game is like any other game except for the fact that the best players in the league play in it. The starters for the Eastern Conference were, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Derrick Rose, Dwayne Wade and Dwight Howard. The starters for the Western Conference were, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard. The West led the game from start to finish, but it still was still close down to the end. Like all All-Star games it was a little defense with a lot of high flying offense. At some points in the game it seemed like a shoot out between the East’s Lebron James and the West’s Kevin Durant. Many analyzers said that the All-Star game MVP race mirrored the regular season MVP race. That is because the MVP was either going to be Kevin Durant or Lebron James depending on who’s team won. In the end it was a victory for the West with Kevin Durant winning the MVP award. The final score of the game was the West with 152 and the East with 149. All-Star weekend is meant to give players a time to relax and NBA fans a time to watch their favorite players play against one another.

iPad!

Oh, yeah. You heard me right. The iPad is coming back this March, better than ever. It’s gonna be lighter, sleeker, longer battery life, a faster processor, and yet.. all the amazing features from the first two iPads. It’s got clarity-clear(not claratin-clear) cameras, it’ll have OS X Lion, and a good iOS, too. None of this making sense for you? Eh.. Here’s a link.

H.R. 1981/PCIP

A new bill, akin to SOPA and PIPA, even written by the same author, Lamar Smith R-Texas, is now being fast tracked through Congress. This new bill, H.R. 1981, a.k.a. PCIP, requires all ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to store all the websites you have visited in the past 18 months, in order to catch criminals who visit illegal sites or pirate games and movies.
You should be aware and scared of this bill because if you have accidentally visited an illegal site or popups have lead to you to such a site, you (Or your parents if you’re under 18) can and will be sent to jail. This bill could mean the end of the Internet as we know it, as everyone who uses the Internet can be sent to jail for practically nothing.
This bill is being fast tracked through congress, which means that congress is hiding the bill from the public and not stating any dates that they will vote, meaning that there is little to nothing you can do to stop it, so prepare for the worst.

Angry Birds Gets an Upgrade

A genius named Simon Ford has developed a real slingshot that works with the game.  Simon believes angry birds should be a sport so he provides instructions on how to make your own slingshot. Here is a video of the slingshot in action!

This past Sunday was the most anticipated awards show of the year. The night people all over the world watched as the Oscar winners from previous years presented awards for the years top movies. The nominated movies were "The Artist," "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Hugo," "Midnight in Paris," "The Help”, "Moneyball," "War Horse," and "The Tree of Life.” Although “The Artist” won as best picture, “Hugo” took home many of the awards. Octavia Spencer of “The Help” won for best supporting actress, while Meryl Streep and Jean Dujardin took the award for Best Actress and Actor. “Rango” won as the best animated film of the year. A film from Iran won for Best Foreign Language Film. Many Harry Potter fans were upset because it wasn’t even nominated for best film. Lots of TV hosts said it was because “people actually watched it.”

A few of the best dressed on the red carpet were Jennifer Lopez, Gweneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock, Cameron DIaz and Kate Mara. Kristen Wiig, Berenice Bejo, Rose Bryne, Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Melissa McCarthy were on the worst dressed list. I thought everyone looked absolutly stunning.

The host of the event, Billy Crystal, pleased everyone with his humorous songs and funny jokes. Many people watched in awe as Cirque-de-Soliel did a performance to take you back to the era of good old-fashion movies. The theme of this years awards show was to take people back to the movies that are now considered classics. 1930’s style dancers walked around with containers of popcorn to go along with the theme, while also satisfying the cravings of the hungry crowd.

Overall, besides those Potterheads, everyone was very happy with the outcome of the 84th annual Academy Awards.
